10 Things Every Homeowner Should Check This Fall!

Fall is officially here, and even though we are not deep into the season yet, this is a great time to get ahead of a few small things around the house before the colder weather really starts to settle in.

Here are just a few easy things that are worth checking now so your home feels ready for the season ahead.

Outside the Home

1. Check your gutters and downspouts
Make sure water can move freely through your gutters and downspouts, and that it is being carried away from the foundation instead of collecting near the house.

2. Inspect exterior caulking
Take a quick look around exterior windows and doors for any cracking or gaps. Catching small areas now can help keep drafts and moisture out later.

3. Check exterior faucets
A quick check for leaks now can save you from dealing with a bigger issue later in the season.

4. Trim back plants and branches
If any plants or branches are touching the house, now is a good time to trim them back and give the exterior a little breathing room.

5. Refresh your porch and entryway
Sweep the porch, clean up the walkway, and give the front entrance a quick refresh. It is one of those simple things that instantly makes the whole exterior feel more put together.

6. Keep enjoying your outdoor space
You do not have to pack everything away just because fall has arrived. Give patio furniture and cushions a quick clean and enjoy those outdoor spaces for as long as the weather allows.

Inside the Home

7. Replace or clean your furnace filter
This is one of the easiest things to forget, but it is a good habit to check your furnace filter before you start relying on your heating system more often.

8. Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors
Take a minute to test each detector in your home and replace batteries if needed.

9. Check weather stripping and heating vents
Have a look around doors and windows for worn weather stripping, and make sure heating vents are not blocked by furniture or rugs.

10. Give the fireplace a quick check
If you have a fireplace, now is a good time to make sure everything looks ready before you start using it again for the season.

Fall Inspo

The maintenance side of fall is important, but the fun part is making your home feel a little more seasonal too!🍂

You do not need to completely redecorate. A seasonal planter, a few warmer textures, a refreshed entryway, or some simple porch details can make a big difference without doing too much.

And if selling has crossed your mind for later this year or next spring, fall is also a good time to start noticing the little things around your home that you may want to tackle ahead of time. (like booking your exterior photos! book here📸)
